Choosing between gel and acrylic nails is one of the most common questions we hear at Amherst Nails & Spa. Both are popular, both look beautiful — but they’re quite different in how they’re applied, how they feel, and how long they last. Here’s everything you need to know to make the right call for your nails and lifestyle.
What Are Acrylic Nails?
Acrylics are the classic nail extension. A liquid monomer and powder polymer are combined to create a paste that’s shaped onto the nail and air-dried (no UV lamp needed). The result is a hard, rigid extension that can be filed into virtually any shape — square, coffin, almond, stiletto.
Best for: People who want significant length, a durable finish, and don’t mind coming in every 2–3 weeks for fills.
At Amherst Nails & Spa, acrylic full sets start at $35 (cash) for natural acrylic, with color, ombre, and pink & white options also available.
What Are Gel Nails?
Gel nails use a UV or LED-cured gel product. At our Amherst salon, we offer three gel enhancement systems:
- Gel-X — soft gel tips adhered over the natural nail. The most flexible and lightweight option.
- Builder Gel — applied directly on the nail with a brush to add structure and length. Great for strengthening weak nails.
- Poly Gel — a hybrid of acrylic and gel. Strong, flexible, and sculpted with a dual-form or brush-and-slip technique.
Gel enhancements typically feel lighter and more natural than acrylics. They’re also slightly more flexible, which many clients prefer.
Best for: People who want a lighter feel, hate the strong odor of acrylics, or have weak nails that need strengthening without heavy product.
Gel-X and Builder Gel full sets start at $70 (cash) at Amherst Nails & Spa. Poly Gel starts at $80.
Key Differences at a Glance
| Factor | Acrylic | Gel |
|---|---|---|
| Application | Air-dry (no lamp) | UV/LED cured |
| Feel | More rigid | Lighter, more flexible |
| Odor during application | Stronger | Milder |
| Durability | Very durable, 6–8 weeks with fills | 3–4 weeks between fills |
| Damage to natural nail | More aggressive removal | Less damaging when removed correctly |
| Cost at Amherst NS | From $35 (full set) | From $70 (full set) |
| Best for | Length, dramatic shapes | Natural look, weak nails |
Which Is Healthier for Your Natural Nails?
Both can be worn safely with proper application and removal. The key rule: never pick or peel either type off. Improper removal causes the most damage, not the product itself.
Gel enhancements are generally considered slightly less damaging because they’re thinner and more flexible. Builder Gel in particular is popular for clients who want to strengthen brittle nails without adding heavy product.
If nail health is your top concern, talk to one of our technicians — we’ll assess your natural nails and recommend the best system for your situation.
Which Lasts Longer?
Acrylics typically last longer between appointments (6–8 weeks) but require fill-ins every 2–3 weeks as the natural nail grows out.
Gel enhancements may chip or lift slightly sooner if the nails are exposed to a lot of water or harsh chemicals. Fill-ins are recommended every 2–3 weeks as well.
In practice, both require the same visit frequency — it’s more about which finish you prefer.
What About Gel Polish vs Gel Enhancements?
This is a common confusion. Gel polish (like a gel manicure) is just a type of polish applied over your natural nail and cured under LED — no extension involved. It lasts 2–3 weeks without chipping.
Gel enhancements (Gel-X, Builder Gel, Poly Gel) add actual length and structure. They’re a different category.
Our gel manicure starts at $45 (cash) and is a great option if you love the longevity of gel but don’t want extensions.
Our Recommendation
- Want length + durability on a budget? → Acrylic is a great choice. Start from $35.
- Want a lighter, more natural feel? → Go with Gel-X or Builder Gel.
- Have damaged or weak nails? → Builder Gel strengthens while looking great.
- Want maximum flexibility and strength? → Poly Gel is worth the upgrade.
