How to Make Your Manicure Last Longer (7 Pro Tips)

Published May 5, 2026 · Amherst Nails & Spa

You just left the salon with a fresh manicure and it looks perfect. Then three days later — a chip. Sound familiar? The good news: how long your manicure lasts is heavily influenced by what you do (and don’t do) after you leave the salon. Our nail technicians at Amherst Nails & Spa share the tips that actually make a difference.

1. Let Your Nails Fully Cure Before Getting Wet

This is the most overlooked step. Even if your regular polish feels dry, it takes 24–48 hours to fully harden. During that time, avoid:

  • Washing dishes without gloves
  • Swimming or hot tubs
  • Long hot showers (steam softens fresh polish)

For gel polish, you’re cured immediately under the LED lamp — but the top coat can still be slightly tacky for a few hours. Give it a little time before handling rough surfaces.

2. Wear Gloves for Cleaning and Dishwashing

Cleaning products — especially bleach, dish soap, and multi-surface sprays — are the enemy of any manicure. Prolonged exposure to water and detergents lifts the edges of polish and weakens the bond.

Keep a pair of rubber gloves near the sink and make them a habit. This single change can add an extra week to your manicure.

3. Apply Cuticle Oil Daily

This isn’t just for looks. Cuticle oil keeps the skin around your nails hydrated, which prevents the lifting and peeling that often starts at the edges. Dry, cracked cuticles pull the polish away from the nail plate.

Apply cuticle oil every night before bed. A small amount goes a long way, and it works with regular, gel, and dip powder finishes.

4. Avoid Using Your Nails as Tools

Opening soda cans, scraping stickers off, prying open boxes — these habits chip polish almost instantly. Train yourself to use the pads of your fingers, a key, or an actual tool instead.

This is especially important in the first 24 hours after your appointment.

5. Apply a Top Coat Every Few Days (Regular Polish Only)

If you’re wearing regular polish, adding a thin layer of clear top coat every 2–3 days refreshes the seal and adds a layer of protection against chips. Focus on the free edge (the tip of the nail) where chipping starts.

This doesn’t apply to gel or dip powder — adding top coat over those at home can actually interfere with the finish. Stick to cuticle oil for those.

6. Keep Your Hands Out of Hot Water

Hot water expands the nail plate, which breaks down the bond between polish and nail. Short, warm showers are fine — but avoid long soaks in hot baths, hot tubs, or hot water-heavy cooking tasks (like peeling boiled eggs) in the first few days.

The same principle applies to gel nails: repeated expansion and contraction from heat can cause lifting over time.

7. Moisturize Your Hands — But Correctly

Dry hands lead to dry nails, which chip faster. Moisturize regularly, but apply hand cream before adding cuticle oil — and avoid getting lotion under the free edge of your nail, as it creates a slippery surface that breaks the polish seal.

Also: avoid hand sanitizer directly on your nails. Alcohol-based sanitizers dry out polish quickly. If you use sanitizer frequently, apply it to the palms and rub hands together without saturating the nails.

Which Type of Manicure Lasts Longest?

If you want the longest wear with the least maintenance:

  • Regular polish: 5–7 days with proper care
  • Gel manicure: 2–3 weeks (up to 4 with excellent care)
  • Dip powder: 3–4 weeks routinely

At Amherst Nails & Spa in Amherst, NY, our gel manicure starts at $45 (cash) and our dip powder starts at $50 (cash). Both are excellent options for long wear.

When to Come Back

Even with perfect care, nails grow out and the gap at the base becomes noticeable after 2–3 weeks. That’s the ideal time to book a refresh or fill-in.
