A first trip to the nail salon is a special milestone for a lot of kids — and a fun outing for parents too. At Amherst Nails & Spa, we love welcoming our youngest guests and making their experience memorable, comfortable, and age-appropriate. Here’s everything parents need to know before booking your child’s first manicure or pedicure.
What Age Is Appropriate?
There’s no strict minimum age for a salon visit. For very young children (under 5), we typically recommend simple polish on the fingers or toes — nothing that requires sitting still for a long time or complex techniques.
For kids 6 and up, a full kids manicure or pedicure is a great experience. By this age, most children can sit comfortably for the duration and enjoy the process.
What Services Do We Offer for Kids?
At Amherst Nails & Spa, our kids nail services include:
- Kids Manicure — Regular polish: $20 | Gel: $25
- Kids Pedicure — Regular polish: $25 | Gel: $40
- Polish on Hands or Toes — Regular: $10 | Gel: $20
- French Design add-on — +$5
All services are sized and paced appropriately for younger clients. Our technicians know how to keep kids engaged and comfortable throughout.
Should I Choose Regular or Gel Polish?
For most children, regular polish is the better starting choice:
- Easier to remove at home with regular nail polish remover
- No UV lamp curing required
- Plenty of fun colors to choose from
- More affordable
Gel polish is a great option for older kids (10+) who want their manicure to last longer — especially before a vacation, dance recital, or special occasion. It lasts 2–3 weeks without chipping and requires LED lamp curing, which is quick and painless.
What Happens During the Appointment?
A kids manicure typically includes:
- Nail trimming and shaping to a safe, comfortable length
- Gentle cuticle tidying
- A brief hand massage with lotion
- Polish application in the color of their choice
For a kids pedicure, add a warm foot soak and foot massage. Most kids love the massage — it tickles at first, then feels relaxing!
The whole service takes about 20–30 minutes depending on the child’s age and how still they can sit.
Tips for a Smooth First Visit
Talk it up beforehand. Let your child know what to expect — the warm water, the smells, the polishing process. Excitement replaces nervousness when kids know what’s coming.
Let them pick their color. This is the fun part. Letting your child choose their own color (even if it’s glittery purple) gives them ownership of the experience and keeps them engaged.
Time it right. Book during a calm time of day — not right before nap time or when they’re usually hungry. Mid-morning on a weekday tends to be quieter and more relaxed.
Plan ahead for gel. If you choose gel, remember it requires an LED lamp cure. Let your child know about the “nail dryer” in advance so there’s no surprise.
Stay close. We ask that a parent or guardian remain present throughout the appointment for children under 12.
Is It Safe?
Absolutely. We use professional products and maintain strict sanitation standards. All tools are sterilized between clients, and single-use items are used where applicable. Our polish brands are chosen for quality and safety.
For younger children, we use gentler products and take extra care with nail trimming.
